virtual private server
A virtual private server is a function of breaking up one physical server computer into multiple servers such that each server has the appearance and capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine. Basicaly, Virtual private servers builds the gap between shared web hosting services and dedicated hosting services, giving independence from other customers of the VPS service in software terms but at less cost than a physical dedicated server. Each virtual server has its own operating system, and each server can be independently rebooted. Web hosting companies develop the virtual private server to provide features usually reserved for a dedicated server at affordable price. Web hosting users need more flexibility, custom configurations, and root access, and the concept of a true virtual server fit their needs perfectly. With a virtual private server, each web hosting account receives their own operating system.
The most common operating system is a highly specialized version of Linux or Unix. The user's operating system runs the typical domain hosting software, including an FTP server, a web server such as Apache, and an email server. Users can configure these components without affecting other users on the same physical machine because they are working within their own operating system. They are usually given the option of "root access," meaning they are allowed to use the root account on their server. The root account is required if you want to compile your own programs, change ownership of files and directories. As a VPS runs its own copy of its operating system, customers have superuser-level access to the machine, and can install almost any software that runs on the OS. Certain software does not run well in a virtualized environment, including firewalls, anti-virus clients, and indeed virtualizers themselves; some VPS providers place further restrictions. Due to the number of virtualization clients typically run on a single machine, a VPS generally has limited processor time, RAM, and disk space.
